The arrival of sound in cinema transformed the Tarzan franchise forever. In 1932, Metro-Goldwyn-Mayer (MGM) cast five-time Olympic gold medalist Johnny Weissmuller as the title character in Tarzan the Ape Man . At 6'3" and 190 pounds, with a physique honed by years of record-breaking swimming, Weissmuller was the perfect physical specimen for the role. Despite his lack of acting experience (his only prior film appearance had been in a musical where he wore only a fig leaf), his performance was phenomenal, and he became the sixth actor to portray Tarzan in films.
