Skandalakis (1920–2009) was born in Sparta, Greece, and graduated summa cum laude from the University of Athens before emigrating to the United States in 1951. He became a towering figure in surgical anatomy at Emory University School of Medicine, where he taught anatomy from 1956 and later became the Chris Carlos Professor of Surgical Anatomy and Technique. His prestige was such that in 1984, Emory University established the Thalia and Michael Carlos Center for Surgical Anatomy and Technique, and he became its first director.
