I stopped at the edge of the clearing where the old stone well sits. The well has been dry since the thirties, capped with heavy timber. But the timber was pushed aside. The violet light was pouring out of the earth, painting the surrounding birch trees in shades of bruised purple. I stepped closer to the edge. I looked down.
