Imam Ahmad ibn Hanbal (d. 241 AH / 855 CE) was the founder of the Hanbali school of Islamic jurisprudence ( Fiqh ). While he is widely celebrated for his mastery of Islamic law and his foundational Hadith encyclopedia, the Musnad , he was equally revered for his extreme piety, simplicity, and strict adherence to the Sunnah.

The book is formally titled Kitab az-Zuhd (كتاب الزهد), which translates to "The Book of Asceticism" or "Renunciation." Interestingly, while it is attributed to Imam Ahmad, the final compilation was largely the work of his son, `Abd Allah. Like many classical texts, the book was assembled over time, with the son incorporating and organizing narrations from his father, as well as adding around half of the sayings independently from other authoritative chains.
