A gay man doesn't need the government's permission to change his name or gender marker to match his identity. A trans woman does. The process of updating driver’s licenses, birth certificates, and passports is expensive, bureaucratically hellish, and in many states, impossible. This creates a permanent class of people whose legal identity is at war with their lived identity.
