The movie begins on the last day of British rule in Hong Kong in 1997. Detective Inspector Lee (Jackie Chan) of the Hong Kong Police Force is on a mission to arrest the mysterious crime lord, Juntao. When the daughter of the Chinese Consul, Soo Yung (played by Julia Hsu), is kidnapped in Los Angeles, the FBI scrambles to save her. The consul, trusting no one more than Lee, requests his help. Unwilling to let an outsider interfere, the FBI assigns a "babysitter" to keep Lee away from the investigation: Detective James Carter (Chris Tucker), a wisecracking, loudmouthed, and entirely unpredictable LAPD detective who plays by his own rules. The two cultural opposites, who can't stand each other, are forced to team up to rescue the kidnapped girl. This clash of personalities, combined with Chan's incredible martial arts and Tucker's rapid-fire humor, creates pure cinematic magic.
