Spin the pedals to ensure the bottom bracket feels smooth and silent.

Apply a bike-specific degrease formula to the chain, chainrings, and cassette. Scrub away grime with an old toothbrush.

Flip the bike upside down onto the saddle and handlebars. Open the quick-release lever and unscrew the nut slightly to lift the wheel out. (For the rear wheel, shift into the smallest cog first to create chain slack).

Hold the front brake and rock the bike forward to check for headset play. Ensure the handlebars are perpendicular to the wheel.
