Born in Los Barrios de Gordón (León, Spain) in 1937, Sabugal felt a calling to religious life, joining the Order of Saint Augustine. After his ordination as a priest in 1963, he moved to Rome to pursue advanced studies at the prestigious Pontifical Biblical Institute, where he eventually earned a doctorate in Biblical Sciences. This academic formation marked the beginning of a prolific career as a biblical scholar and theologian. He dedicated his life to teaching at various institutions, including the Patristic Institute "Augustinianum" at the Lateran University and the Pontifical Athenaeum "Regina Apostolorum," until his retirement in 2007.
