The narrative unfolds on New Year’s Eve aboard a luxury ocean liner. A rogue wave strikes the vessel, capsizing it instantly. While the majority of the survivors follow the captain’s orders to remain in the ballroom, a small, disparate group of compliance-defying passengers attempts to climb upward toward the ship’s hull, which now rests on the ocean surface.
A small group of survivors, led by the cynical professional gambler Dylan Johns (Josh Lucas) and the determined former firefighter and mayor Robert Ramsey (Kurt Russell), refuses to wait for a rescue that will never come. They decide to climb upwards through the bowels of the upside-down ship, fighting through flooded compartments, blazing fires, and collapsing steel. This stripped-down narrative is intentional.
