From the outside, the life of a Hollywood star can often seem like a whirlwind of red carpets, high-fashion photoshoots, and a constant stream of new projects. It’s a world that actress and singer Lucy Hale, known globally for her role as Aria Montgomery on the hit series Pretty Little Liars , knows intimately. Yet, as she shared in this exclusive interview, the true picture of her life is far richer, grounded in a profound sense of self-awareness, heart-centered creativity, and a dedication to projects that carry a meaningful message. The Genesis of a Creative Soul For Hale, the spark of creativity was ignited at a very young age. Growing up in Tennessee, she was a child with a "huge imagination," finding escape and expression in the magical world of Disney movies. "I lived and breathed for Disney movies and I would make up these plays and sing songs in my room," she recalls. This early passion for performance evolved into formal singing lessons, with music initially taking center stage as the primary path she wanted to pursue. However, as she grew, her artistic vision expanded. Alongside her love for song, she discovered a deep fascination with human behavior. "I loved people, I loved observing people, I loved impersonating people and finding characteristics of people that I found were interesting," she explains. This curiosity naturally led her to acting, and she soon began taking acting lessons, seamlessly weaving together the two disciplines that now define her multifaceted career. The Artist's Inner Landscape: Authenticity and Purpose When asked to describe herself as an artist, Hale’s answer is immediate and resonant. "I'm very heart-centered, I'm always trying to lead with authenticity," she states. As she’s matured, she feels more rooted in her identity, allowing her to lead from a place of genuine self-knowledge rather than following fleeting trends. This groundedness is the foundation of her work. She is no longer interested in just any project; she seeks out those that have a tangible impact. "I just want to do things that have an impact or matter or I want to be a part of projects that have a bigger message," Hale shares, noting that sometimes, that powerful message can be as simple as spreading a little joy. For Hale, creativity is not just a career but an essential outlet. "I feel really lucky that I'm a creative and that I have that outlet for me because it's almost like therapy," she reveals. This perspective transforms her work from a mere profession into a vital practice of self-expression and exploration. Fashion as Art and Identity The glamorous side of her career— the fashion— is a source of genuine excitement. For Hale, stepping into a character's wardrobe is a key part of the storytelling process. "If you're building out a character for a job and getting to pick out that character's wardrobe, that's so much fun to me," she says. She sees clothing as a profound reflection of identity, noting that "the clothes that we put on each morning is such a reflection of who we are as a person inherently and also how we feel about ourselves". This appreciation extends to her experiences at New York Fashion Week, where she gets to wear pieces of incredible craftsmanship. "The craftsmanship that goes into some of these clothes is truly incredible. Behind every beautiful dress is hundreds of people that have put in hours of work to hand sew. Everything is art," she marvels. For her, wearing these creations is akin to wearing someone's realized dream, adding a layer of profound respect to the art of fashion. The Sacred Act of Self-Care and Boundaries Beyond the public eye, Hale prioritizes her inner world with a rigorous, sacred approach to self-care. "I am a self-care queen. I will make the time always," she declares. For her, this is not about spa days or manicures, but about the vital practice of daily introspection. "By self-care I mean it's vital for me to take the time out of each day to check in with myself," she explains. Her routine includes mindfulness practices like meditation, journaling, or simply taking a long walk to "get really clear on how I feel". This journey of self-discovery also led her to a pivotal realization about boundaries. "A couple years ago I was like 'I've got to start setting boundaries in my life'," Hale recounts, describing it as a turning point. This could be as simple as saying no to a dinner invitation or making a larger life change. "When you start respecting your boundaries, other people will respect you and the right people will enter your life and the people that don't work for you will exit," she advises, highlighting the powerful and transformative effect of honoring one's own limits. A Heart for Advocacy: Pet Adoption Hale’s commitment to a bigger purpose was on full display last summer when she teamed up with PetSmart to champion pet adoption. Her love for animals is deeply personal and fervent. "I love animals so much. I have always advocated for animals," she says, noting that she’ll gravitate towards the dog at a party. She is the proud owner of two dogs: Elvis, who is seven, and Ethel, whom she adopted from a rescue in Los Angeles. Her advocacy is driven by a sense of compassion and duty. "They don't have a voice, so having people step in to advocate for them is very important," she emphasizes, pointing out that rescue shelters are currently overloaded with dogs in desperate need of a loving home. The Role of Animals in Wellness Having been open about her own mental health journey, Hale explains how her dogs have been instrumental in her wellness. "I don't know if they're aware of it or not, but they can, without saying words, remind me to be gentle with myself and to be patient and to show myself compassion," she says. She credits Elvis with the ability to give her a look that tells her to "chill out" and notes that her other dog, Ethel, will leave the room when her anxiety spikes. "There's a reason animals are called emotional support," she affirms. Their presence helps her stay present, grounded, and reminds her that she's okay, providing a unique and irreplaceable form of accountability and calm. Conclusion: What's Next? As for the future of her career, Lucy Hale is embracing the unknown. "Every time I've tried to have plans for my career, somehow my career keeps surprising me," she admits. While she holds big dreams and believes in manifesting her goals, she remains open to the unexpected detours. After swearing off music for a while, she’s now considering a foray into theater. She’s also nurturing her talents behind the camera, with goals to write and produce more, including a deeply personal story she’s been wanting to put on paper. "It's just having the bravery to start or complete that," she reflects, leaving her fans with the sense that her most exciting chapters are still yet to be written.

From a groundbreaking debut in her bedroom to captivating global audiences, LÜCY has redefined what it means to be a modern indie folk artist. In this exclusive, in-depth interview, LÜCY opens up about her musical journey, her battles with imposter syndrome, and the inspiration behind her highly anticipated new work.
From the Bedroom to the Big Stage For most artists, the path to stardom involves years of grinding in small clubs and struggling to be heard. For LÜCY, it happened almost overnight from the small bathroom of her family home. Growing up in a bustling household with six children in Taiwan, she never had a room of her own. Her earliest songs were not written in a professional studio but in a small, lockable bathroom. From the outside, the life of a Hollywood
"When I first started creating, I would always lock myself in the toilet or hide in the closet. I would write songs in corners where no one could see me," LÜCY recalls with a soft laugh during our exclusive conversation.
At just 19 years old, she was messing around with a guitar at home, casually humming melodies. She recorded a snippet on social media, and the response was immediate. "Everyone kept asking, 'Whose song are you covering? It sounds so good.' I didn't even know what 'songwriting' was back then," she admits. That track, of course, was "Cactus" (〈仙人掌〉). After sending the demo to producer Hai Da-Fu, the song officially dropped on the Taiwanese streaming platform StreetVoice in late 2020, becoming a viral sensation almost instantly. To understand LÜCY’s music is to understand her name. Born in the year 2000, her name is inspired by the Beatles’ classic "Lucy In The Sky With Diamond," a favorite of her stepfather's. However, refusing to be ordinary, she added the umlaut (the two dots over the "U"), turning LUCY into LÜCY. Her fans have lovingly nicknamed her "Aunt Lucy" (露西姑媽), a name she embraces with good-natured humor. Conquering the Fear of Being Seen Despite her meteoric rise, including sold-out shows and international touring, LÜCY is refreshingly honest about the fear that accompanied her success. She describes the transition from writing music as a private "diary" to performing it for thousands as deeply jarring.
"Standing on stage felt like having my secret diary opened up and examined. I was terrified of how people would judge me," she confesses. The Genesis of a Creative Soul For Hale,
The pressure led her down a dark path that she is only now fully leaving behind. In the early days of her career, she relied on cigarettes and whiskey just to get through a performance. "I used to keep a small bottle of whiskey in my bag. Before going on stage, I had to rely on alcohol and cigarettes to relax. I was really... scared of performing," she says, her voice trailing off. Her aversion to alcohol runs deep. Her mother struggled with drinking, forcing LÜCY to grow up quickly, taking care of her younger siblings. "This is also why I never want to rely on alcohol again," she states firmly. "I don't want to become like my mother". "Dance on the Shoreline": A New Chapter Today, a more mature LÜCY stands before us. She has spent years traveling the world and playing at festivals across Europe and America, gradually learning to open her heart to strangers. This evolution is palpable in her latest work, including the album Dance on the Shoreline . When discussing the album's visuals—which feature her barefoot, dancing by the water in the sunshine—she reflects a sense of newfound freedom.
"I imagine my world is as clear as the ocean, with sunshine so bright there isn't a single shadow," she says, explaining the album's aesthetic.
