In the mid-1990s, prolific Italian director Joe D'Amato (born Aristide Massaccesi) shifted much of his attention from mainstream horror and exploitation movies to high-budget adult features. Unlike the cheaply made, indoor "gonzo" adult videos dominating the American market at the time, D'Amato approached Tarzan-X with the eye of a traditional cinematographer.

Tarzan x Shame of Jane (original European title often formatted with an "x" to denote adult content) was directed under a pseudonym by a little-known Italian filmmaker. The plot, as much as it exists, follows a shipwrecked Victorian anthropologist (Jane) who discovers Tarzan not as a noble savage, but as a creature of primal shame and repressed desire.
