In video games, 2015 was a landmark year. The Witcher 3: Wild Hunt was released in May and quickly became a benchmark for open-world RPGs, winning hundreds of Game of the Year awards. Its rich storytelling, deep side quests, and gorgeous world set a new standard. September brought Metal Gear Solid V: The Phantom Pain , Hideo Kojima’s final game for Konami, which impressed with its stealth mechanics and emergent gameplay, even as its unfinished story left fans divided. And Fallout 4 , despite mixed reviews, sold 1.2 million copies on Steam within 24 hours of its November release. Meanwhile, the indie scene shone with Undertale , a quirky, heartfelt RPG that became a cult classic almost instantly.
