Cornelia Southern Charms
What makes this downtown so charming for visitors is the mix of old and new. You’ll find:
Towering over the city from an elevation of 1,830 feet is the iconic Chenocetah Fire Tower . Built in 1936 by the Works Progress Administration (WPA), this 54-foot stone tower is a true architectural marvel and the only granite fire tower in the state of Georgia. The name “Chenocetah” is derived from a Native American word meaning “see all around”—a perfect description for the breathtaking panoramic views it offers. Cornelia Southern Charms
The fourth charm was a diner booth. At the Hometown Cafe, booth #4 is called the “Corner of Consensus.” For three generations, farmers, mayors, preachers, and teenagers have sat there to settle arguments. The rule is simple: if you sit in booth #4, you can’t leave until everyone agrees on one true thing. The waitress—usually Diane, who has worked there since 1987—writes the agreed-upon truth on a sticky note and places it under the glass top. The notes have accumulated like geological strata. “Gravy fixes most things.” “A promise made on a handshake counts twice.” “No one has ever been late to their own funeral.” And from 2019: “Cornelia is not the apple. Cornelia is the root.” What makes this downtown so charming for visitors
