The story takes place six months after the events of the first film. Tony Stark (Robert Downey Jr.) is publicly known as Iron Man, but faces mounting pressure from the U.S. government, led by the corrupt Senator Stern (Garry Shandling), to hand over his suit's technology. As Stark's health declines from the palladium core in his arc reactor, he is targeted by a new enemy: Ivan Vanko (Mickey Rourke), a Russian physicist who builds his own arc reactor technology to seek revenge against the Stark family. Vanko partners with Stark's jealous rival, weapons manufacturer Justin Hammer (Sam Rockwell), setting the stage for a climactic battle featuring an army of Hammer drones and the debut of Stark's ally, James "Rhodey" Rhodes (Don Cheadle), in the War Machine armor.
