To search for is to search for the apex of the revenge genre. It is the second installment of Park’s "Vengeance Trilogy" (following Sympathy for Mr. Vengeance and preceding Lady Vengeance ), but it stands alone as a cultural landmark. If you have never seen it, be warned: spoilers lie ahead. If you have seen it, you know that once you enter the corridor, you never really leave.
The narrative premise of Oldboy is deceptively simple yet profoundly existential. On a rainy night in 1988, Oh Dae-su (played with ferocious intensity by Choi Min-sik), a mundane, obnoxious businessman and negligent father, is abruptly kidnapped. He wakes up locked inside a makeshift, windowless hotel room with no window to the outside world, no human contact, and no explanation. Just as abruptly as he was captured, Dae-su is released onto a rooftop in 2003. Armed with a hammer, a literal thirst for vengeance, and a profound sense of disorientation, he sets out to find his captor. He soon crosses paths with Mi-do (Kang Hye-jung), a young sushi chef who takes pity on him, and the two form a deep, traumatic romantic bond. The film's editing, handled by Kim Sang-bum and Park Il-sung, is also noteworthy, as it seamlessly weaves together the non-linear narrative, creating a sense of disorientation and confusion that mirrors Oh Dae-Su's own disorientation.
Kim Hye-soo also delivers a memorable performance as Mi-do, bringing a sense of warmth and humanity to the film. The chemistry between Choi Min-sik and Kim Hye-soo is palpable, and their interactions add a layer of complexity to the narrative.
